From Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) to Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD)—New Terminology in Pediatric Patients as a Step in Good Scientific Direction?

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic in world, which predispose to more serious hepatic conditions. It ranges from simple steatosis nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), may progress cirrhosis, and even end-stage disease. Since obesity became one of important health concerns wordwide, a considerable increase prevalance NAFLD other metabolic implications has been observed, both adults children. Due coexistence visceral obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, considered be manifestation syndrome (MetS). These relationships between MetS led set up new term combining these conditions, called dysfunction-associated (MAFLD). Based on findings, we propose criteria, useful diagnose MAFLD children adolescents.
